Pretty new to road cycling, just bought a cheap second hand B'twin Sport 1. Bit of a state.
Came on the forum to learn about bike maintenance and upgrading, and hoping to enter some triathlons and Ironman next year.

Hi Jason and .
Learning to maintain your bike and what to upgrade can be a lot of fun.
You say the bike is in a bit of a state but providing the frame is solid everything else can be sorted.
Take time to prioritise what needs doing first and take it from there.
Plenty of help here.

+1 for asking advice in the know how section. There's a bunch of helpful and knowledgeable people in there.

As mentioned above, if the frame is sound pretty much everything else is fixable/upgradeable. The cheap bike currently in my avatar has had almost everything upgraded except the frame, forks, handlebars and certain brake bits.
