It means 'darkness beyond' acc to google translate. But 'market bottom' is funnier.

Not quite the full story I think - there are details in certain Nobel prizes that prevent joint recognition but not in all, in particular not in the Physics prize. The EU got the peace prize last year right? There is no precedent of the Physics prize being awarded to a group before but I heard recently that it was not against the rules of that particular prize.

The rule is self-imposed, as I understand it.

Apparently the convention is that the prize isn't awarded to institutions - a maximum of three people can share it.

You can award for two works though, but there is a limit of three people. I would say it is slightly more of a surprise it was only awarded to two people as much of the last year there has been much speculation which combination of three out of five would receive the prize (it was six, but Brout died in late 2011 and speculation used to be three out of six - i.e. Peter Higgs + two others). As Brout died you could say it was consistent. Having said that, triple awards are more unusual in the total history of the prize than appears the case these days. Interestingly enough a small poll I saw by people interested in the subject suggested other candidates and Goldstone came third in it (and not other members of the six).

As Joe Incandela (no that isn't a Physics pun it's a real person) said the prize for them was the discovery.

My impression was the certain have explicit conditions but either way the curious/unfortunate thing is that nobody in CERN got a mention.

Separately, there is a film called Particle Fever that I've heard is a rather remarkable documentary about the physicists involved in the LHC. It may well get on general release in the UK so do look out for it if you are curious. Here's the trailer:

They have to split the dosh, according to wikipedia. Split the atom*, split the dosh... there's a nice kinda symmetry there.

*yes, I know that was long time ago

Got a mention?

The official press release mentioned both Higgs and Englert four times two of which were in the blurb and not the beginning or end (although there are additional mentions of the Higgs particle and not the person). CMS was mentioned at least twice, CERN was mentioned at least five times, LHC at least twice and CMS at least once. Six thousand scientists were also collectively named.

Word to Prof Tom Kibble who was also in line for the prize. He taught me General Relativity at Imperial - a very fierce undergrad course. Lovely man and quite the cyclist. Maybe next year prof!

At a guess, anti gravity. It's the next giant leap!

12 billion quid for the Large Hadron Collider to find out what gives us mass...

I could have told them a lot earlier....

It's father O'Malley on Sunday moning.

Higgs Boson walks into a Church....and the Priest says "We don't want your sort in here"

Higgs Boson replies "But without me how can you have mass?"

I heard that, at the time, Prof. Peter Higgs knew nothing of the announcement about the Nobel Prize because he didn't have a mobile phone on which to be contacted. Anyway he was having lunch in Edinburgh at a restaurant "with a rather remarkable range of good beers". This is most refreshing. A modest scientist who doesn't expose a lot of flesh or wave their arms about on prime-time TV bleating about impending doom. I like it.

Cheers.

The Eagle Pub in Cambridge has a claim that Crick and Watson came in in an exuberant manner, had a couple of pints and announced the decoding of DNA to the assembled patrons. A plaque commemorates this:
