I understand luxury, and or expensive cars just not sub 6sec 0-60 160mph+ cars, I used too just don't now. There is no where in the UK where you can use that sort of power, other than like @GrasB on track days which I agree are probably a lot of fun.
535i GT - 0-60 6.1s & a limited 155mph top speed. I found was underpowered & needed pulling through to 5000-5500 rpm when up in the Alps. So now I'm thinking about the 550i GT which is 0-60 5 seconds, where as if I was to look at a diesel equivalent I'd have a 530d with a 6.2 0-60.

The police officer may be trained but what about the car in front?

What look down the road properly & always carefully judge speeds? You don't actually know what's coming your way & if the approaching speed has any relation what so ever to the posted speed limit.

And how often on UK roads do you find the 535i underpowered?

Honestly?
I seemed to cope much better with the high altitude of my in-law's residence than the 5er

What pointing out that purpose built vehicles without consideration for noise ended up quieter & more powerful in road driving terms than vehicles which were 'performance tuned' for the roads?

Mrs 3BM's got a VW Up with a 3-cylinder 60bhp engine, I think it's quite nippy.
