I like the ciggy bit....

Reminds me of the time (in the infancy of MTB's) when us 'roadies' went out with a MTB club...... we flew up the hills...stopped and waited... the MTB club caught up, had a fag or two, the wasted us on the downhill stiff....... PS not talking any of this man-made trails rubbish.....proper off road............ Nutters the lot......

Talking of ermine, you know the little black dots in an ermine robe?

Each one is the tip of a stoat's tail.
Are you sure? I would have expected my robe to be a couple of feet thick, in that case, whereas it easily fits in my locker next to Lord Fffitch of Nempnet Thrubwell.

Ha ha. No, they aren't layered in in situ, they cut the tips off....

I have no idea if they still are BTW, probably have to ask Gieves and Hawks to find out.

According to Leicestershire County Council:
The first quarter is a cinquefolium, or five petalled ermine flower, within a red circle, which belonged to the Beaumont family. In 1103 Robert de Beaumont was made the first Earl of Leicester.

According to Wikipedia, the dragon is a wyvern:
The crest on top of the arms is a white or silver legless wyvern with red and white wounds showing, on a wreath of red and white. The legless wyvern distinguishes it as a Leicester wyvern as opposed to other wyverns.

Apparently wyverns are associated with power and strength. I lived in Leicester for 7 years and didn't know any of that!

It would make a lovely enamel badge!

Wow Baggy - we live and learn

I'm wondering now about the Leicester leglessness. Have you experienced any of that?:sad:

If they'd replaced the wyvern with a newt while I lived there it might have been more appropriate :biggrin:

Am intigued by the leglessness too, will have a look for some more wyvern info later...
