Can't find anyone ! Where are you?
We did find each other in the end! The reason for the comms breakdown was that
@colly's call to me was reported as from '
Private number' so I ignored it the first time (we were in traffic and didn't want to stop). When he rang again I realised that it was probably him but we only a minute or two away by then so we just carried on.
Great ride guys, thanks again.
I only stopped for a photo once because there was a strange, dimly glowing disc in the sky.
This is about as clear as it got on the hills, but the valley bottoms were fairly clear.

Yes, the almost-freezing fog was present nearly all day. I don't know how colly coped in shorts!!
It was a shame about the fog because we couldn't see the glorious autumn leaves in the trees until we were nearly at the finish.
My Wahoo recorded an average temperature of 3 degrees and a minimum of 1, and those figures included the Wahoo being warm when I set off and again after the cafe stop. It was damn chilly!
I haven't warmed up properly yet. I made the mistake of not switching the heating on before I left the house this morning. Why waste money heating an empty house, eh? The answer is that if I had done, it wouldn't have been only 15 degrees here when I got back! Hours later it is still only 17 degrees. I have just turned the radiator temperature up for the first time this autumn.
Is there any loop anywhere near HB that isn't hilly?
The short answer is... NO!
The Calder Valley is narrow so the A646 is the only road along it (unless you count backstreets in settlements along it). To go anywhere other than up and down that road involves going over pretty big hills.
Here is the climbing data from today's ride, including the extra bits between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge...
You can see how lumpy the profile is. The numbers are clearly wrong though - I started and finished at my front door, so how could the ascent and descent figures differ by 150 metres? The explanation can be seen when I zoom into that profile...
I switched my Wahoo off at the stop at Craggies cafe, and then back on again afterwards. The device did not handle that well! I am sure that we did more like 1,150 - 1,200 m of climbing.
My pal Bill left us as we turned back down towards Cragg Vale. He preferred to continue up the hill to Blackstone Edge then home via Littleborough.
We took the easy way back to the cars on the A646 between Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. I said goodbye to colly and Dadam there. It was nice riding with you again, lads; see you for another Garforth ride in the spring!
I then rode home along the Rochdale canal towpath. I wanted to see if any of the 5 cobbled weirs in that section had been bridged yet. Nope! The cash is available to pay for it but for some reason the job seems to be taking forever! 4 of those weirs were treacherous today - broken up cobbles, big gaps , slippery slime, and gushing water. 1 wasn't too bad. I will use the towpath more once the work has been done but for now - no thanks.
I won't organise any more rides before the spring unless we get a much nicer day. I can't take the cold like I used to when I was young!
