Hit and run on PCSO

Not the first time this has been done to a PCSO. Sometime last year a PCSO suffered severe back injuries after a driver decided to plough into her..

..To me this raises a couple of questions:

1. Registration obviously hasnt solved bad driving.

2. Is hiviz now so prevailent that drivers dont "see" it as they used to?

3. Does hiviz now hide the authorities? (There was a time when I was one one the first around here to wear a hiviz reflective top, it got strange reactions from drivers who would seem to slow down, turn down their radios, etc)

Another bit of shocking behaviour, to actually stop, get out of the car and then decide to drive away not knowing what damage they'd caused.

Get ready for the usual trolling comments on that site later, same as any other cycling related story

She was cycling along Wordsworth Road South in Old Trafford in high-visibility clothing when the driver turned onto the road from Kings Road and colided with her.

Because certain elements of society are trying ever so hard to make a point that people are "invisible" if they dont wear it. Blame the victim enough and put constraints on them and they'll either give up or compo will be a lot less.

But that's shooting themselves in the foot a bit. She WAS wearing hivis, and he still hit her. What's the value of hivis there?

I believe hit and run should be treated extremely seriously by the courts - with a custodial sentence at the very minimum, an a life driving ban.

Come on - they hit someone, and drove OFF!!!

PCSO or not, that is a human being......if your first thoughts upon hitting someone is to drive off, then why the **** should you ever be permitted to endanger anyone else with your obviously abysmal driving?

I find it incredibly annoying where some very bad case of dangerous drive/causing death by careless/dangerous driving happens, there is a conviction and yet all too often there's not even a prosecution for hit and run - which can carry six months in prison. It'd be nice if under the current situation things were actually followed through.

Thinking about this today on my ride in and the (slightly paranoid) thought crossed my mind... perhaps the prat who drove into her knew she was there, knew it was a PCSO and did it deliberately?

Agree with CP too, if you're that bad and dont have the balls to help after then off to Prison.

I know this part of old Trafford quite well, having lived in the area for years, I have driven and cycled (less) around these very roads, so thought I would take a look via google maps.

[Incidentally the road is not called 'Wordsworth Rd South', just 'Wordsworth Rd' which is what initially had me checking on the map to confirm my local knowledge ]

My speculating would go like this:

• Cars parked probably on both sides of the road, leaving a norrow 'lane' where only 1 vehicle can safely pass; driver turns in possibly going too fast, not expecting any traffic to be on that road (it is fairly quiet) and not paying enough attention, clips cyclist, maybe even after 'seeing' and thinking they could squeeze past.
• Panics and gets out to look, still in a panic drives off hoping to avoid having to face up to what they have just done.
  
  (- ie not deliberately targeting a PCSO but still despicable behaviour)

Shame there are no car details to look out for - most likely a local, otherwise no need to use these residential side streets.


NB - Not to excuse any careless/ wreckless/ dangerous driving that may have taken place, just my take on one possible/ probable scenario.

Looking at GSV gives me the thought that its very much like many of the side roads around here. After rushour they become parking bays for commuters and school run mums.
