I much prefer the Good Morning / Afternoon approach. To me it seems politer somehow.
As I said already I've no problem with what he's trying to achieve, but they way he posts about it is shoot.
It struck me as a rather candid post from the OP and I'm not sure where your ire is coming from.
I'm sure we've all had thoughts along the lines "of teaching someone a lesson" and I'm sorry to say that if the thought police got onto me, I'd be serving a life sentence in a meta-ethical gaol (and in other, harsher jurisdictions, I'd be executed).
Being currently unable to use my bike for reasons which I'll not go into I'm parking a couple of miles away from work and walking in along the canal to keep the old muscles in working order. The tow path varies from a little under a metre wide (short lengths) to a couple of metres wide (also short lengths) with an average of a metre and, for the most part, I've walked well into the side (secondary position) in order to let cyclists pass freely.
No problem where it's wide but I've had quite a few close shaves where it's narrow culminating today in being hit by the bar of someone passing at a rate of knots. Bit of a wobble but he never even paused or shouted sorry as he sped on his way.
Tempting as it was to give him a 'nudge' when I passed him in my car a few miles down the road I resisted but from now on be warned - if your travelling between Stourton and Leeds along the canal you'll find me walking in 'primary position' and you may as well sit back and relax until the path widens ... or you may find yourself in the Knostrop Cut.

Did that this morning, as usual: Cycled past one of the usual old ladies out for a walk, 'Good Morning'd each other. 20 yards ahead two youths taking the whole path width, so I slowed again to walking pace.
"Good Morning" ... no response. Path widened slightly on the left,so I moved that way.
"Good Morning, just passing on your left" ... no response, path not quite wide enough to actually pass.
"HELLO" ... nothing ..."HELLO!!", youth on the right (no earplugs) notices me, grabs his mate (earplugs) and drags him off balance. Mate looks shocked, sees me and mutters "Oh, sorry".
"That's fine, Good morning and thanks".
As I rode away I heard "eeeaarh" followed by "Yahhhnoo" or similar. I think he was singing along to his - what are they called? ipod?![]()
I took the post as the black humour it was intended to be.
Whilst his first two paragraphs read ok and are a good description of the alledged incident his last pargaraph is just idiotic.
He's admits when he sees the cyclist later he's tempted to run him down with his car, strange behaviour from a self confessed cyclist. He then explains that in the future if you are a cyclist want to go by he wont move and if you attempt to pass you he'll knock you into the Knotstrop Cut which is the route of the canal at that point.
If its intended as humorous it does not read that way due the fact theres no smilies or "I'm joking of couse!" expressions in it.
The irony is that the Knotstop Cut is probably one the best places to pass people, being absolutely straight with no obstructions to view and extremely wide for a towpath.
Cut is on the left, River Aire on the right.

What I think has happened to him is further back from this point where the path moves slightly away from the side of the canal, gets quite obstructed in view at times and can be very narrow.
At the end of the day, troll or not, I like talking about good shared path use as that's where i mostly cycle![]()

Lollage.
"Moron", iditiotic" and "shoot" - your words. It seems you're getting a bit het up by this thread. I'd not search so assiduously for perceived anti-cycling prejudice from a (lurker?) newbie post as they might have an (understandable) aversion to smilies. To me, it reads as jokey/blokey reportage - with a pedestrian in primary twist, and it's most likely sending up this forum's obesession with road/path positioning...
I think you're right to worry about it being rude, wiggy. I see many pedestrians with angry faces when cyclists ring bells at them. The good cyclists only ping once or twice, and use their brakes, but the bad ones are like the one in this clip:

Pedestrians still often misinterpret the good cyclists' pings IME.
p.s. why thank you MrHappy!

Whether he is aware of all internet traditions, I do not know.
Anyway what do you mean 'aversion to smilies', is he allergic to them? A Smilaphobe perhaps![]()
