Whether he is aware of all internet traditions, I do not know.

Anyway what do you mean 'aversion to smilies', is he allergic to them? A Smilaphobe perhaps

In any case troll or not, me angry or not - this is actually a very nice section of canal (Aire and Calder Navigation) to cycle/walk/skip along. Barely a mile outside of leeds your passing through a wonderful reclaimed (from mine) wetland nature reserve and the route of the TransPennineTrail follows it for a few miles. Definitely worth a look if your ever in the area

Lollage.

To me, it reads as candid, jokey/blokey reportage - with a pedestrian in primary twist, and it's most likely sending up this forum's obsession with road/path positioning...

That sums up pretty much the way I intended it to come across.

My last paragraph may not have been well put but:
1. the temptation to give him a dose of his own medicine was real albeit the likelihood of me ever doing such a thing is about 0.01 on a scale of 0-100. I'm human after all and
2. I will take 'primary' and if you have the courtesy to signal in whatever form then I'll happily move out of the way. If, however, you want to plough past me regardless, at 15/20 mph, with no warning then I'm not about to co-operate. My remarks were aimed at louts of the type who, rather than lose a bit of momentum, rather than signal he was about to pass me, chose to try and pass me with little room for error and ran into me.

It was also intended as a 'boot on the other foot' observation having read the myriad of posts on here about the aggression used by people using a bigger vehicle than they are.

Having only recently taken up cycling again after about 8 years out of the saddle I had a look at a few forums. This one advertises itself as 'fun and friendly'. I'd hoped it would be. Why only four posts? I've been back and had a look a few times but there does seem to be an obsession with 'incidents'.

So thanks to those who showed some understanding and farewell 'fun and friendly' posters <insert sarcastic smiley> who did their best to make me feel welcome.

I think a lot of Children are on the forum today. Welcome and don't take it personally. Most of us are grown-ups who can take a joke

It is generally very friendly here, even though people have strong views on some issues, so I hope you haven't been put off.

Thanks for responding Beetnik, I appreciate the correction of what you meant and can see now you didn't intend it to come across that way. On the flipside of that I'm sure you see how I interpreted as I did  .

Your entirely right and I agree that this forum is obsessed with incidents, I'm sure you see the irony in mentioning that within a thread about an incident  However ironic is doesn't mean these incidents aren't important I've appreciated the chance to talk about one that I can relate to - the majority being road based events which thankfully for me are rare.

I think if you post something which can easily be interpreted as somewhat aggressive towards people and towards the primary focus of the forum, I don't think it should be at all unexpected if some other posters might not be as fun and friendly as they would normally be.

Just my ha'penny.

The cyclist in the your incident was undoubtedly a jackass, but in my experience its often better to just let these things go (if only for your own sanity) - and this probably counts for some of the incidents on here as well. But should you need to resist the urge to nudge someone again in the future think of this. Regardless, I hope you don't give up cycling.

The OP was (perhaps jokingly) talking about giving up CycleChat (he was taking a break from cycling for an unspecified reason), and given the way that people have misread and misinterpreted his thread, I'm not entirely convinced he was being facetious.

No, I got that he said he was giving up Cyclechat, I actually mean I hope he doesn't give up cycling (despite my disagreement about his joke). In his earlier posts he says he's only just come back after a long hiatus and was feeling the benefits, but in his OP in this thread he says he not cycling at the moment... so I genuinely hope he's not giving up. People come and go on fora all the time, so whilst its a bit of a shame if this thread has caused him enough grief that he doesn't want to stay, its his call.

But just goes to show, I guess, how easily things can be read a different way than the one intended by the writer.

And some are addicted to this kind of nonsense and are receiving counselling to ween them off (naming no usernames, but I know one who begins with "O").

Yes, but please don't start that banning smiley business again. :surrender:

On the photo of the path - that looks narrow enough that I'd want to take a lot of care passing a pedestrian there. Not the place to be doing 20mph past someone.

I'm not quite sure how to take the OPs post but I understand his reasons for posting. I get fed up with POBs brushing past me as I walk across the site to my partners office at lunch time.

I think the problem is the "PING" itself , it's sharp and quick and sounds like "get out of my way" I have a Ping on the Brompton and a huge great bell with the most wonderful sonourous Dinng doooong on the Ridgeback , they get completley different reactions from pedestrains, including smiles, and "Lovely bell" when using the "big bike"

I agree, I think a Dutch dingdong bell is super nice. If I ever get a Quest, I'm going to make sure it has one. In the case of the video I posted though, that rider is making aggressive dinging. I've seen/heard other cyclists do much more polite dings that were more clearly an "I'm here" and entirely less rude/push through in nature. It's not just what you have, but also how you use it.

As an observation - typically a single ding will result in a glance over the shoulder & moving to the side of most orientals around here, where as the exact same single dig will often often provoke the of the reaction pedestrian moving into a place where they're deliberately blocking the path of the cyclist if they are a 'native'.
