Did it when I was in my twenties - a great way to travel. Hardly see anyone doing it these days.

Have hitchhiked around Europe many times, before I discovered that cycle touring was a much better way to travel for free!

Having said that, I do love hitching. Its a romantic way to travel. You never know when your next lift is coming, where it is going, or who is going to be behind the wheel. And you can't beat the feeling when you have been waiting for ages, think you will never got a lift, and then someone stops - its a buzz.

Stories? Best lift I ever got was from a Turkish (female) stripper. That was pretty interesting! Oh and there was one time a beaten-up old car that had obviously been in one or two accidents stopped. Behind the wheel was a Chinese man and everywhere else in the car was just potatoes, everywhere, just thousands of potatoes. I had no idea where he expected me to sit.

I used to do it all the time.
Got picked up by a woman in a dressing gown in the winter who had been swimming in the sea. She wanted me to come to her church the following weekend, to learn how to bell ring. She was slightly odd.
Van load of blokes booze running. They bought me a bacon roll at the cafe on the way, and gave me beer.
A vicar, who drove at 30mph on the Motorway, and took 3 hrs to do an hr journey. He kept quoting scriptures at me.
A bloke who had just driven from Africa in his Land Rover. He was fascinating. i was a bit sad when the I had to get out. he had so much to say.

I wouldn't do it now, but it was a good way to get about 20 years ago, when i was young and skint.

Did it for years over here, and when I spent a year travelling around NZ and Australia after university it was my only transport. Had some great rides - and no really bad ones.
