Holiday destination with decent cycle hire

I know this has been done a fair bit but I thought I'd try it back-to-front. Looking for ideas for holiday destinations that provide the classic combination of decent cycling and sun/sea etc. - but the cycle hire has to be decent quality, i.e. well maintained, good quality road bikes.

Any recommendations for hire shops in 'holiday territory'? Any area but don't really want to go long haul.

I've found one in Mallorca and know there is one in Tenerife but anyone found any others?

Cheers

Link don't work snorri but if ...ighlands means what I think it does, it ain't gonna wash with the wife's summer holiday ideals. Greek blood you see - needs warming up at least once a year.

Yay someone who has the common sense to think about cycling options before they book!

You could try Cycling Country who operate around Granada. They seemed, when I met them, to have a reasonable hire fleet.

Maybe also Skedaddle? Although I'm guessing you're not looking for a cycling holiday as such.

I've seen posts recommending these guys:

but I've no experience of them.

Club La Santa in Lanzarote. It's good enough for some pro-teams for winter training. Check out Club La Santa.

You don't have to say at Club La Santa, (I didn't), but they are a sports oriented resort and they have organised rides if that's your thing.

I took my own bike and did my own thing, but I visited La Santa a couple of times and it looked a nice place

Hi,

Hope no one minds but I am coming at this from the other side as it were, we live in a fantastic part of the world for cycling, no crowds of tourists, as not that many native French people can immediately point to this area on a map, so very light traffic on generally well maintained roads, testing but beautiful countryside, lots of good places to eat and at reasonable cost, sorry but here comes the advert……………. we also have suitable bike friendly holiday accommodation, with the 8[sup]th[/sup] stage of the Tour de France passing less than 5 klms from the front door of our Gite ( 9[sup]th[/sup] July 2011), so for someone wishing to tour the area by road or visit any of the local off road facilities the region has a lot to offer the discerning cyclist.

We would love to share our enjoyment of cycling in this area and would therefore encourage as many cyclists as possible to discover this region, so we have looked very carefully at the possibilities of bike hire, but we have a problem. We are not new to the world of cycling but we are new to the holiday business. So we have accommodation and presently we offer some bikes of good quality, which are of course well maintained, but inevitably we feel given the almost limitless possibilities, whatever we offer is likely to be considered something of a compromise, and will not suit all tastes or requirements. Clearly we would be delighted to receive suggestions as to what exactly what we could offer taking account of the mixed nature of our locality, or are we correct in thinking that many people will only be happy with their own bike and will want to bring that with them?

Accommodation details see: http://giteonze.com/

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Italian option andym mentioned looks very good - seaside hotels, decent bikes, route plans, guides and organised rides (if you want them), loads of food, beautiful part of the world. Not that cheap mind. I think the other main option I'm considering is a week in Mallorca in autumn - prices for a week with self catering accommodation at under £200 at the moment. I'll think on it. Would November be too late for Mallorca?

Interesting question, 1 Iota. And a lovely area that you're in - I love France.

It's difficult - I guess you're in the a position where you either try to cater for everyone or aim for a specific market and risk alienating yourself from others. I think the main distinction you'd need to make is whether you are catering for 'serious' cyclists or just 'people who might want to hire a bike'.

People for whom cycling is a major part of their holiday would fall into two categories, I'd say - those who want to bring their own bikes (probably quite a high percentage) and those (like me!) who want to hire - but hire top quality bikes (and usually bring our own pedals, shoes, helmets etc.). In which case you'd need a fleet of top spec machines and make it clear that you have all the other facilities cyclists would want - bike washing area, maintenance/workshop space, decent shower, decent clothes washing facilities, access to loads of food etc.

The other end of it is 'normal' holiday bike rental - a few hybrids and some kids bikes for pootling around on.

Or go for both - but that would require more space/cash for bikes.

I'd be inclined to say there are a lot of people in the 'serious cyclist' category who would want to bring their own bikes and that would be a reasonable market to aim for - without you having to worry too much about the hire.

Dunno - I'm just thinking aloud really.

Mallorca is ok in November except it can rain a fair bit (and snow), most of the resorts are quiet so accomodation is easy to find. The good things is that there are fewer coaches on the back roads so a lot safer.

Fuenteventura is also a good possibility in November.
