Bearing quality of the BB and colour are the differences, if any.

Yes you can mix and match Hollowtech II bb's and cranksets. I have an Ultegra BB with Tiagra crankset, no problems.

i've been told by a lbs that sora, tiagra and 105 groupsets have very little difference between them and if your going to upgrade ultegra would be the minimum

i'm using a r700 crankset (which is said to be above utlegra) a wheels manufactureing ceramic bb and a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed tiagra and have had no problems

In my humble opinion, I'd say the split comes between Tiagra and 105. I don't think there's a great difference between 105 and Ultegra and then there's another obvious (and very expensive) leap up to Dura-Ace.

I agree, but now that Tiagra is 10spd with the same brifter setup as the higher groups, I think that point of split is moving down the range.
