Do you grease the crank axle?

I have, largely out of habit. It occurred to me on the ride in that it's not really necessary though, given the crankset only contacts the BB at the outer bearings...

Yeah - I can see it being needed if there's contact between the sleeve inside the BB shell and the axle - what worries me slightly is that if there isn't that contact, the grease is potentially trapping dirt &c inside the bb...
