Anyone used an IP camera for keeping a relative safe ?

My MIL is physically disabled having had a stroke etc. She can just about make it to the loo but has carers in 4 times a day.

Despite what we say, she likes to have cash on her. It's always a few hundred.

My wife has control of all her bills as MIL didn't want any involvement after FIL died. My missus gets her mum cash when she asks. Given she goes out once a week for shopping with a carer, she is getting through quite a bit of cash. This last week she has gone through £500.

My wife has told her she is going through too much cash. We don't know what she is spending it on.

Things have come to ahead and guilt points in three places. Carers, jobless nephew or niece with new baby. Unfortunately jobless nephew got it in the neck from all corners of the family and he swears he hasn't taken any (he is round at least once a day).

My suspicion is carers.

Been looking at a Samsung HD 6410 camera. It would need to be hidden in a biscuit tin, but that's not an issue as MIL already has crap like this lying around. It seems to be what we need. Activity zone can be set, so we can leave that where the cash is always left so as not to record if MIL or visitors use the room in general.

It has the usual remote viewing and records to SD which can be played back remotely.

Anyone got any other recommendations. My wife and sister in law are keen to get this in ASAP.

Plus side is we can check she is OK and it does two way communication.

Daft question, but wouldn't hiding it in a biscuit tin seem out of place?

The intention is to catch who ever it is, but my SIL has already said one has been put in to my nephew.

If it's covert we may catch who it is. The thieving will either stop now as the suspect knows or it may be a carer.

I'd prefer to have it fitted to the wall as hiding it will reduce field of view.

TBH it probably make no difference as my MIL will just tell them there is a camera. She can't keep anything quiet despite speech issues from the stroke.

Hey having a full hd camera might just help and I can shout 'press HDMI 1' when I get the next phone call about the sky picture being faulty.

lost somewhere
We went through this with my dementing mother. It's a very painful and emotional business. Although we had no reason to suspect theft, she was steaming through cash at a quite alarming rate. She may just have lost it somewhere. There may have been more sinister forces at work but she reached a stage where she seemed incapable of being trusted to manage her own financial affairs. We arranged to get power of attorney and limited the amount that she could withdraw from the bank in cash. The bank, Barclays, ignored this. They were certainly highly incompetent Eventually, we just blocked her bank account entirely and rationed cash personally. She's much further down the line, dementia-wise now. It's horrible. You have my sympathy.

Why not go down the overt route, saying that's its so she can contact you, even if its just by means of a thumbs up. If she's trouble talking, or she's doing something.

We don't know if it's, take this and get me that from the shop, and not wanting the change from 'whoever' or to simply giving too much away.

We do know she has been spending on her great grand child. She only deals in cash. Makes sure my wife gets her a wedge but won't and refuses to deal with her finances. She isnt badly off on benefits and disability so can manage, but £500 a week isn't sustainable.

She recently forgot that she gave £1k in cash to one of her daughter's, so had us and the other daughter about to call the cops, then third daughter decided to own up to having been given it. Nearly had the cops out and MIL was so sure it had been stolen (tears and howling).

Don't think it's dementia but we do think it's related to her heart failure, and not taking water tablets, which mean fluids on lungs, and poor oxygen saturation, leading to confusion. Similar happened to her husband but he had lung cancer.

She is demanding. We had the howling again last week. Feel sorry for my nephew, as it may just be she is forgetting what she is spending. It's all low denomination, so it's a 'wedge'. She may even be donating too much to the church on their visits,

Just don't know but it's a way of keeping an eye on her. She can't use a cash machine (well she could but makes someone else key it in). But never uses it, although last week managed to draw cash out on a credit card. Same number but asked a carer....

We are coming upto Christmas and she does manage to but a heap of crap for everyone. Literally loads of crap.

Oh. Pale blue or pink.... Possible option too.

The temperature would be a 'fark me it's hot in 'ere' alert. I can't stay in the house long before feeling like I will pass out. And she is covered in blankets.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Not quite on the security issue be we had the dehydrated confusion issue with the MIL. Cleared up (condition improved) after a spell in hospital for another issue- docs forced it down her.

Thankfully she more or less has her shoot together otherwise.

We had a problem with my elderly MiL

She is registered blind, so her problem is she cannot see things

We went round one day and found all the drawers sellotaped as someone was coming in and stealing things such as her knives anfd forks, brrsd maker, glasses, scissors etc

Despite finding everything she was still adamant that someone was coming in, and had now put them back!

We bought a "wildlife camera" and every week downloaded the stil and video images.

Then when anything goes missing we sit her down and go through the video with her to prove no-one is coming in

Found one that will do the job and a £50 off voucher from Maplin brings it in at £100 which is a bargain. It does some clever stuff like condenses 6 hours of movements into 1 minute video and logs times of the movements on the image.

If the MIL get's hacked off with it, it can also be used as a sport cam or dash cam, and even has a waterproof case as an option.

Still major issues in the family, and it's still looking like nephew has robbed the cash - lots of evening visits where he has gone into the lounge when MIL has been in bed or being bathed by my other SIL. It's starting to add up.

Shame...

The disaster has hit I think. Few other issues as well. We are prepared for it. MIL won't let us call the cops. It is a safeguarding issue, but if MIL won't let the cops be involved ???
