Hi All,

I've been given some spuds - too many in fact. This missus is away on holiday with the kids and I'm home alone, so I'll never use them up before they go green.

What I'd like to know is : might I be able to wash/peel the spuds and then chop them up and freeze them as chips ? If so, is there anything additional in terms of preparation that I should do ?

How do you use up surplus spuds ?

Ta for any help.

You will need to dry them off and allow them to cool first before freezing. You can also freeze left over mash as well if you make too much.

They shouldn't go green if you keep them in the dark (not in the fridge, as that gets light every time you open the door). Find a cool dark place. (After all, folks used to keep potatoes over the whole winter!).

Chop a few in half.

Carefully cut different shapes in the flat faces. Star, triangle, moon etc; you know what I mean.

Go to B&Q and buy several tins of various bright coloured paint.

Redecorate the house.

Tip.

Cut various size stars. Buy a tin of luminous paint and decorate the bedroom ceiling with the popular constellations. "Look Honey, we're sleeping under the stars".

For Heaven's sake DON'T eat them. They're TOO fattening.

Ms P and I grow our own at our allotment. Sometimes we'll dig up enough to fill the bike trailer. I keep them in sacks in the shed, they can last quite a long time(depends on variety)

Put them in a large, strong paper bag and keep them cool and dry.

The traditional method was to keep them outside in a large "pit," thatched with rushes to a depth of about 8" and after a few weeks when they are well dried out, cover the rushes with clay and make sure it's sealed well against frost and you will still have them next spring.

Make them ALL into chips, get some tinnies, then lie on the sofa eating chips and drinking beer till it's all gone.

While the FAT in chips makes them rather full of calories and so "fattening" spuds themselves are actually quite low in calories and could be considered a diet food.

Boiled, Mashed or Baked with no fat added you can eat as much as you like and you will not get fat.

Boiled, with no butteron, you could eat only one and it'd feel like you'd been eating them forever...

Try-
Chilli Relish - or just about any relish or other stuff you would bung on barbicued food. They are fat free and veg based but have some sugar in but the hot ones you need very little of.
Eat them cold with just a little low fat mayo.
Make them into mash with a little skimmed milk.
Put some mint into the water or add some black pepper.

The big problem of our age is not with the quantity of food we eat (although we should eat less as we generally burn less energy than we used to) but through the plentiful supply of convenience foods and elaberate cooking we now have a very over-rich diet.

As the above post demonstrates, many seem unable to eat just normal foods without making them over rich.
I lost a couple of stone and have kept my weight in check simply by not adding sugar or fat to things. I still eat the odd cake but if you get out of the habit then most fatty food starts to taste rather horrid. I really cannot eat even fried chips now.
