I had exactly the same in my house, there are 8P8C "network" ports around but they are wired for phone. The RJ11 (modem) type phone plug fits them, not the BT type.

Smash the cistern
Well I snuck into the bedroom while the toddler wasn't looking; lo and behold, it's a regular phone socket in there. So overall I think I've got a master socket in the kitchen, extended to an RJ45 in the lounge and a BT socket in the bedroom.

The latest issue is that the router's not even connecting, despite the broadband supposedly being activated today, so I'm going have to wait until tomorrow and then ring BT.
