sounds legit to me. When I tried to angle grind my disc lock off (I mentioned it in another thread), there were no sparks. Same idea really. There's aboviously something in the metal that is designed to dampen the abrasive effect. I think I have tried cutting gaffa tape before with a power tool, probably by accident/laziness, and it did interfere.
