I don't rate Dyson's. They are too flimsy - bits of plastic keep breaking off.
I recently got a Panasonic MC-UL594, as it got a Which best buy award/review, and isn't that expensive. Very good suction (a bit too good on the hand tools), and the front has a low profile, so it can fit under chairs etc easily. Best of all is that it seems to be sturdier than other vacuum's I've used.

Our local hoover repair man says Dysons are what's kept him in business for years. To say he doesn't rate them is putting it mildly. Having once sold them, I reckon the best ones to go for are Electrolux. Miele are good, but nowhere near as much better as the price premium might suggest. Electrolux are like the VW of the vacuum cleaner world: never the sexiest, never the most glamorous, but they cost no more than they should and they just keep on working.

We've got about 10 Henry's and a couple of his bigger mates. Some of them have been knocking about for the last 20 years with no problems whatsoever and the design hasn't changed.
Couldn't recommend them more.

We had several years of Hoover woe, breaking down, no bags etc. Henry came to the rescue, the cheeky little fella.

Henrys don't even need bags. I've never used one.

One of mine has also fallen down two flights of stairs in my house while it was working and it just carried on. I had to chase it down the stairs to fetch it back up again.

I bet it just lay there at the bottom and grinned at you, didn't it?
