Which was worse, the van or the flatbed?
It's hard to tell how close it is from the vid. It doesn't look bad, but you were the only one there.
Here is an easy method, pause the video when the van is just in front. Draw an imaginary line in front of the video where you believe the front wheel is going. Then see how far that would be from the edge of the vehicle, don't forget to take into account half the width of a cyclist. To me I would say the pass was around 3ft but at that speed it is far too close.

Punishment pass? can this really be called that?

I see a punishment pass as someone showing a deliberate act of driving dangerously past a cyclist to prove a point. I think this was just a poor understand of how a vehicles wind turbulence affects and cyclist and not 'this guy shouldn't be on the road / i don't like his actions so lets pass him with inches to spare and force him to the gutter'.

Felt like a lot less than 3 feet TBH.

I don't know for sure what was going through his mind, but there was an empty lane to his right that he didn't move into sufficiently, so my first instinct was that it was a punishment pass. Could just be incompetence.

It was the speed as well as the proximity.

Don't know about the title but as a close pass at speed it was totally uneccessary. Driver is a clown.

Eh? Empty lane? There is a white car in the offside lane.

That is still no excuse though, he should've slowed down and then moved over, but it's not a punishment pass unless you show us what you did to p¡ss the driver off in the minutes leading up to this footage.

THe poor pass is done by the white van at 5 seconds in, there are no other vehicles in front and none behind for 5 seconds.

I'll give you that.

I read about it above but just ignored it because to me the obvious closest one is the pick-up. So I overlayed one over the other in photoshop and this is the result.

The pick-up is clearly closer, but the van being taller may have felt more imposing on the OP.

I don't know why the video goes on for double the time if the pick-up wasn't the issue?

I thought the pickup at the end made the best of a bad job as the numpty in the car was overtaking him as he was passing the cyclist. This seems to happen to me fairly often on one particular long straight road on my commute if there is a continuous stream of traffic the people a few cars back don't see you, they only see a line of slow cars they need to overtake

Three feet (ish) at that sort of speed, and with a vehicle of that size, is far too close. It certainly would've got my heart racing.
