So I am 39mph heading down a hill close to home, returning from the Sunday ride.

Suddenly feel like a dart has been stabbed into the side of my knee and almost come off the bike with the shock, grab the brakes and slow down looking for the offending object, but can't see anything, just a ludicrously sharp stabbing pain that wont let up.

At the bottom someone holds the bike while I struggle to the verge to sit and look at what the heck is wrong, knee swelling and can hardly walk.

Seems a horsefly was losing its footing as the speed picked up and decided it was now or never to chomp down. Bastardo!

7 hours on and it still feels like someone is stabbing me repeatedly in the knee with a needle.

I hearby add horseflies to the list of creatures I hate, they are total sods!

Rant over, gonna try drinking some alcohol to numb it, the bite/sting pen/cream hasn't had any effect.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:angry:

Bad luck Johnny. They don't often bite us two legged types, but I can vouch that when they do you do notice it!

Ouch ! I had a simialr experience - doing a quick, twisty and rather technical descent in the Yorkshire Dales a wasp flew into and got stuck in one of my helemt vents stinging me on the foreheadxx(.

My mate couldn't work out what was happening as he flew past with me screaming out loud depseratley trying to stop to get it out of my helmet!! He though I was just annoyed because he was overtaking me:biggrin:

They are nasty buggers

The first time I ever encountered one was only a couple of Years ago. I was relaxing in the garden, basking in the sun with a beer feeling at one with the World.
I was aware of this fly that kept buzzing round me and I kept shooing it away.

But then I thought what the hell, if this small fly really wants to land on me then no bother, it's welcome too and I let it wander playfully across my leg...........
Barsteward

Mind you, I got bitten by something nasty yesterday morning. Out on the MTB, got a p****ure on the local marshes.
AS I was repairing it, I got set about by a load of wierd looking flies. They had fat bodies, like housefiles, but flew with that menacingly slow approach that mossies have.
Anyway, I felt a few sharp stabs and was surprised to see blood from where I'd been bitten (they definately weren't ordinary horesflies)
Today, the wounds have been weeping all day long, half my leg is Red and is painful to the touch.

Nasty, horseflies are hideous, horrible hairy things. When I were a lass I contracted septicemia from a horse-fly bite, still have the scar on my arm from the bite

They are evil, satan's pets, and have suckers on their feet so they can cling onxx(

I got one inside my jodpurs one day in the summer(god knows how as they are tight and I had long boots on:sad:)and have never pulled them off so quick!!!!!:biggrin:Had a line of bites from my ankle to my groin and they nearly drove me mad for the next couple of days.

They are indeed the spawn of satan.

As a child I was bitten by one just next to my left eye - I had to be admitted to hospital so bad was the reaction - my eye became swollen and closed up completely and I had trouble breathing properly.

ouch!

well I think I may be getting away lightly in that it bit the knee and, whilst painful and swollen, it hasn't spread much beyond the joint.

I guess if I wake in the morning to find my leg has fallen off I'll hop to the local A&E ...

Knee badly swollen today, hurts like buggery. Even cancelled one job this morning as a result - and that is almost unheard of as I work for myself.

Buggeration!
