I think it depends on the type of riding, just as with cycling. I think you'll find the vast majority of jockeys, for example, are men. Maybe men are more interested in riding competively, whereas women are more inclined to ride for leisure (although many do compete of course).

It might also be one of those childhood stereotypes - girls are supposed to like ponies, whereas boys like trains and cars. It's not always true, but if preferences like that show up anyway, they'll probably be reinforced (eg, when nephew Oli started to show an interest in trains, we showered him with train themed books and toys, so he's become even more keen)....

Don't really mind that much, just because I don't really encounter it.

Worst thing I've had, on the way into the UEA there is this bit where they had loads of manure...and it was raning...and it had leaked onto the road...and it was all splashing up into my face/mouth - errugh!

It's funny how these 'stereotypes' persist - I know a couple of people who swore they wouldn't force their baby daughters to wear pink, but as soon as they could choose, pink was what they wanted. And one who's second child was a boy says that at less than 18 months, he's already more interested in the tractors that pass their house, than the daughter was. The problem of course is when a child bucks the trend, but isn't allowed to because of what their parents think they should like...

But we digress.

I've never eaten horse, I'd love to try it sometime. Better for you than beef, more polyunsaturated.

Thanks RR for the tip. Almost as helpful as when I asked a chinese student what civet tasted like (it sort of came up in conversation, don't ask) and she thought for a while and said "ah, like dog..."

This did not help me.
