I think it depends on the type of riding, just as with cycling. I think you'll find the vast majority of jockeys, for example, are men. Maybe men are more interested in riding competively, whereas women are more inclined to ride for leisure (although many do compete of course).
It might also be one of those childhood stereotypes - girls are supposed to like ponies, whereas boys like trains and cars. It's not always true, but if preferences like that show up anyway, they'll probably be reinforced (eg, when nephew Oli started to show an interest in trains, we showered him with train themed books and toys, so he's become even more keen)....
