I'm over in Germany working for a week, before I went I set up a free one month trial on Netflix, and Sky Go on my works laptop.

Now I find because of licencing laws I can't watch either of them, even BBC iplayer is only for the UK as well.

Does anyone know of a way round this, as sitting in a hotel room in a small German village is sending me nutty?

Try http://www.expatshield.com/ it will give you a UK IP address, thus Iplayer will think that you are in the UK

I have tried using free spoof UK IP addresses (to watch IPlayer from France) and the whole thing was so impossibly slow to be worthless. Paying for it would obviously make a difference but one has to point out (particularly as we're on a public forum) that it's of dubious legality with specific regard to IPlayer.

For future reference, you could look at a VPN though it's obviously a bit late to set that up now.

Hesitate to suggest this, honest .......... but a TV set makes a VERY satisfying crunch when it hits the bottom of a council recycling site skip? Best thing I did in years and years - and never missed it since.

You need to VPN into a UK network to get the right IP address to lift the blocks. If you don't have access to one that is already set up, it could be a problem setting one up remotely.

Gave mine away ages ago: with a laptop and a broadband connection you can watch anything you like, from any location, but maybe not at the same time as it goes live on a tv channel.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I tried using my work's VPN but even that was defeated.

Still, I'm back home now, managed to get through two books while I was there.

If you are heading out again, shout, we have quite a few people living in Germany who are using UK IPs (they pay a small fee for them), I can send you the details, it works very well, however I should also add that for just week, I would point out that German beer is much better than British TV .

There's no problem with setting them up once you're already outside the UK. I know this often isn't the case, but where VPNs are concerned, you do get what you pay for. The cheaper ones tend to be more heavily used, so are slower. The more you pay, the faster the connection tends to be.

If you do use a VPN, don't log into PayPal while you're connected to it, or they'll probably block your account. Don't ask me how I know this ....
