Just asked a farmer who actually has a bull whether he would enter a field on his bike where there was a bull and he said probably not.

my mate used to work on a farm and she said if a bull charges you should stand your ground and it will probably stop. PROBABLY.

I had a bullock charge at me once. i stood my ground but only coz i had nowhere to go... i was backed up to a fence. thankfully it did stop (but not before i left a big skid mark in my pants) and i slowly edged my way along the fence until i was able to leg it. i reckon it wouldn't have stopped if it had been fully grown.

i think they are much worse if they are in with cows and their young. very protective. we had fields opposite when we were young and we would happily walk across and through a herd of cows BUT never when the bull was in there with them (usually the farmer put him in when they had just had their calves) as he was a scarey f**ker!!!! the lads used to run across playing chicken and he would always chase them.

Two local farmers have been killed in the past 10 years by bullocks. In the one I know about as family friends, the bull was shot before anyone dared go into the pen to attempt CPR on the farmer.

You don't tend to die by being gored but by being crushed, so in a field you are probably a little safer in that there is no solid wall behind to help make a cyclist sandwich.

there was a fence behind me ;)

i had my dog with me. that might be why he stopped. although my dog was not very protective, she was cowering by me. (geddit!)

B*gger that  funnily enough it the Bull calves do seem very bolshy and do stand their ground but I'm quietly confident of winning a fight against one, as long as it's mates don't get involved ;)

Thanks Shaun, thats quite worrying really but then I guess he doesn't really want anyone in his fields anyway.

Thanks all

I've been back through there twice now, and they've all been back well away from the road so no problems there.

I've actually been a bit stupid with these, they are Beef cattle not dairy so it's probably far lower risk anyway.

last time I went through I saw a jogger and another cyclist so they're probably more used to to than I thought.

I'll be really anonyed if I get stomped into the ground next time having said that now.............................
