Hello all,

My long suffering hard drive has finally given up after much noise and computer freezes where the hard disk seemed to be going off on a mission to nowhere. I have the hard drive in front of me ( I'm running Puppy linux from CD/Ram at the moment) it is a Hitachi Deskstar 82.3GB and is marks as ATA/IDE
7200RPM. ( THE ORIGINAL DISK WAS 160GB) My problem now is in order to get another one I need to know what I am looking for as there seems to be many types and the replacement will most likely come from mail order, any help would be appreciated.

A replacement shouldn't be hard to find:

I did a quick search on dabs.com and found four drives matching your requirement. ATA/IDE is the important thing here, and of course always check the link settings on the HDD when fitting a new drive.

You may find similar drives on other sites at better prices.

Many thanks Mikey much appreciated I thought there was only PATA and SATA drive types and was completely baffled by the ATA/IDE ident on the drive I have .

ATA/IDE is another term for PATA

Many thanks Rusky,I have done a low level format on the Hard drive and installed XP ( It's been a long time since I used Windows) It seems a lot better but still has it's moments. I did this just in case I could get the thing to work but sadly I think it's kaput  boo hoo, that means I will just have to put my hand in my pocket, being a self confessed skinflint you don't know how much that can hurt!)

Again many thanks at least now I will know what I'm after.
