I go uphill for a couple of miles, but it starts gently so by the time I hit the steep bit I'm a bit warmed up. I've done the same route for fun (?) in the middle of a ride and find it much easier when thoroughly warmed.
So... the implication is - spend 15 minutes on a turbo trainer before setting out

just take it slow and enjoy the slow improvement as you get used to it.
