Mate has just started a new job-the company he works for have taken over a few other companies recently, so parking space is at a premium. They provide the usual C2W scheme (benefit in kind at the end too, so much less of a final cost to the employee) and also give a £2.50 lunch voucher for every day they cycle in (they have an on site canteen so I assume this broadly covers the cost of a decent lunch).

Even more impressive is they have a bike mechanic that comes round once a month to look at the bikes. The employer will pay for labour costs of any faults plus up to £10 in parts.

They also run a raffle for the ones that cycle in. Each day that you cycle in you get a ticket-not sure what you win though.

He says that out of about 800 employees, 75 regularly cycle in to work.

I only brave it when its not raining, when the other half drops me off at work when its raining and she sees a cyclist, she says "oo look, a proper cyclist"

My commute is 21 - 30 miles each way depending on which part of London I'm working in. I commute a couple of 3 times a week now depending on weather and if heavy stuff like a laptop is required in addition to my usual tools/manuals/CD's
In the car I think about everything and anything. Sit in traffic most of the way, instead of enjoying the horses available to my right foot. Watch life pass me by, look at cyclist and wish i was on my steed. I even think about the Installation I will be doing at the customers site (systems engineer)
On the bike, the day is basically 2 great big long rides with something called work in between. I am enjoying the great outdoors & feel invigorated. My weight for the first time is going down not up. I feel great, look great and I don't have to burden myself with life's worries, just ride ride ride ride ride :-)

How often do you cycle 30 miles each way? As riding 300 miles each week presuming you work 5 days a week is a frig of a lot of riding. You just end up riding, working, eating and sleeping.

It's not 'till you stop commuting for a while that you realise just how much good it does you. I've been 'on holiday' for the past fortnight, and aside from a few rides with the kids, I ain't been out on the bikes. I really am starting to feel more lethargic and I seem to have put on a few pounds. As it's sunny today, I'm going to pop out for a nice 20 mile run, and I'm looking forward to going back to work tomorrow.

Maybe a couple or 3 times a week - simple typo?

Maybe.

Here for rides.
Saves me £14 a day rail fare
One less car on the roads
Inspires me to go to the gym and to go running to get fitter
Encourages other people to commute by bike
But, and this is the biggie, in Mid-Sussex it delivers a useful social service as I provide lots of opportunities for Audi driving men with small cocks to work out their angst and masturbatory power fantasies.

Faster than the bus door-to-door, cheaper (or at least spending money on bike stuff does not feel like it's going up in smoke....) and I'm about 1000 kcals a day better off for it.

The gym bores me. I hate it with a passion. Cycling doesnt, i have to get to work so what better way to get fit and get to work then on the bike?
Cycling also wakes me up in the morning (I am not a morning person!) and chills me out after a long day of work in the evening.
Plus the mentioned cost savings. I try not to drive; it only takes 10 mins extra to bike to work then drive so bit of a no brainer.

£90 a month saving in fuel
£100 cheaper a year car insurance (due to low mileage on the car)
Getting to work feeling like I want to work rather than go to sleep.
Getting home feeling human rather than feeling like going postal.
Knowing what season it is.
Losing 90lb since 2010
All that and being able to eat just about anything I want as I’m burning 1300 calories extra a day cycling.

The problem I have where I live is that if I tried cycling to work, I would end up with hypothermia by the end of my shift. Its permanently raining. Are there any special shoes/clothes etc that can keep you dry without forcing you to sweat?
