I've just had a bloke come round asking me if I wanted to sell some old wooden stairs that are sitting in our garden.

We'd be talking some time (in French) when he asks me 'Who is it that speaks French, you or your wife?' I looked at him thinking he was making a joke. Nope, he was completely serious. Obviously not sodding me is it?

Talk about a put down.

I'd never dare use con, connard or pauvre con etc... I think you have to be really know your French to get it right.

Hell no!! Case of the more you learn, the more you realise what you don't know.

Where I live, the local accent/dialect is Berrichon. Fiendishly difficult to understand. Someone told me it's the Geordie of France! Suffice to say, Parisians (for example) do not understand it either.
