Mmmm. My relationship with hobbies probability mirrors what is going on inside my head. Cycling is part of the two hobbies that I have kept up most of my life. The other is fishing. Both started when I was a kid; using one to get to the other.

I have taken breaks from each sometimes for up to a year or so. I do think that to enjoy cycling you have to be reasonably fit and I get depressed with that, "Every ride is my first ride" feeling. In the early 90s I was doing hundreds of miles a week.

Other hobbies come and go. Fly tying being an example. I quake to think how much I have spent on various materials. Currently it is knife making. It is why there is a small pillar drill in the living room! These hobbies are very full on whilst they last. Usually it is realisation that I'm not very much good at anything that makes me lose interest.

To quote Kryten, "Oh for the services of a truly world class psychologist."

I cycle and run because I enjoy these and they keep me fit. I used to be right into hillwalking, all seasons day and night. Started my uni degree which involved the hills a lot and this killed it as it became like a job. I'll probably get into it again sometime.

Cycling has become a huge part of my life since I retired, even though I don't cycle huge distances, am not in the least interested in competitive cycling, don't knowingly train for improvement and don't own a bike under 25 years old. My cycling joy comes from social rides with friends, cycling combined with wildlife watching, volunteering as a ride leader and fettling my oh-so-basic bikes.

Of course, absence makes the heart grow stronger and the overwhelming desire to go cycling right now is probably coloured by the fact that I've been in a full-leg plaster cast for the past five weeks, with many more to go before I can hop on the bike again.

I am quite enthusiastic about my hobbies :hyper:
All my wee pass times are very relaxing (mostly) cycling, cooking and gardening.
I like creating things and am quite patient. If I'm not actually in the garden I'm often planning my next move
It's my b'day soon and Mr M has (reluctantly) agreed to buy me another palm tree (a different variety to the one I already have). Won't be ordering it just yet though as it's still frosty and don't want to shock it
Planning and looking forward I find is part of the fun

I can really take or leave Cycling if i'm brutally honest. I can go weeks without riding then when I do I'm totally immersed in it. just a bit lazy to get going.

Landscape photography I love. Mostly film and large format, just don't get as much chance as id like with 3 young children. I'd say i'm pretty enthusiastic about this.

Flying was always my #1 love until I started toward my commercial licence in '98/9 then I totally fell out with it, I should have listen to folk when they said once its a job its no longer a hobby, plus it was costing me 10's of thousands. Still fly occasionally, I can see a time in the next few years when I'll give it up.

One thing I was always a real 'mega' bore about was model engineering, I did a tool making apprenticeship when I left school, I have an part finished beam engine that I'm looking to resurrect, a few house moves and a renovation put a stop to it, once we've re-modelled the house I can then re-assemble my workshop, my machines and tools are in storage just waiting to go.

I don't see cycling as my hobby. Much as you wouldn't see driving as your hobby just because you drive to work and back.
That said I am very passionate about the benefits and joys of cycling and will bang on about it for hours if you let me.
I don't actually have any hobbies.

Oh my, what happened? :hugs:

I don't have any hobbies, just stuff I like doing when I have the time.
Cycling is my transport so not a hobby, the mechanics I try to learn are for getting me back on the road, so not a hobby either.
I like reading, cooking, gardening, but they are not hobbies either.
So: I'm a person that does lots of things, none very well has to be said  but no spare time for a hobby!

Football (supporting Chelsea) - massively interesting. Is 'supporting' a hobby I wonder?

Scrambling (unroped rock climbing) - massively interesting.

Hill walking (Lakes/Scottish/Welsh mountains) - very interesting.

Low level walking - interesting.

Reading (lots of) - interesting.

Cycling - borderline interesting (bit of a means to an end really - ie keeping the Grim Reaper at bay).

I'm enthusiastic about lots of hobbies but I don't find it necessary to talk about them to other people. If I'm asked for advice as in the OP then I'd usually be happy to give it.

Mainly I'm happy to quietly get on with whatever I enjoy doing. If other people see me and are encouraged to have a go that's great but I'm not bothered about converting people into cyclists or bird watchers or whatever.
