its on the edge of kent, Welling, Woolwich from Eltham where I live its one large hill in Mottingham (just outside Eltham. Into work its downhill mostly and coming back its mostly up hill with flat bits in between. You don't notice those, particularly on the way home![]()
About 12 miles each way from the SE London (actually Kent) 'burbs into NW1 for me. Live near Sevenoaks so drive into the outskirts, ditch the car and ride the rest of the way. As much as I'd like to say I ride the whole lot, doing the full 27/28 miles on the bike would be pretty knackering and time consuming, esp with the North Downs Ridge to negotiate as a warm up in the morning.
Either Poll Hill or Star Hill right? Poll Hill not great when busy. Star Hill is a great climb though and a fab descent down into Knockholt, one of my favourites.
Yep, it would be likely one of those if I was commuting the whole distance. Star Hill is a great climb and very fast descent which I've done quite a few times on weekend outings. Polhill I avoid where I can because you have cars coming past doing 50+ while you're doing 5 in the uphill and the left hand side of the road on the downhill has loads of gravel, stones, small branches etc which could have you off.
There are also the short sharp country road climbs up the ridge a bit further west - Sundridge Hill, Brasted Hill (aka B@stard Hill) and Hogtrough. All 20%+ gradients but pretty short distance wise.
ssshhh mate or we'll have one of those norverneers that reside on the forum saying there's no hills in the south
In all seriousness, we have some great hills in North Kent. Toys and Ide too and lets not forget the old thigh busters Exedown and Underiver.
I hate to break it to you but I am one of those Norverners 😁 Originally from near Middlesbrough but been darn sarf since uni days. Luckily we're not easily offended 😃
Well acquainted with Toys and Ide - the South face of Toys is character building. Will have to look up Exedown and Underiver, ta. Have you also tried Yorks Hill?
Some good ones around here in Surrey too. Some I can get up (e.g. Box Hill) and some I can't (e.g. Ditchling beacon) and some are just hard (Leith hill). There are also epic 20%ers like Chalkpit, Succoms, White Lane and Barhatch which are beyond my abilities.ssshhh mate or we'll have one of those norverneers that reside on the forum saying there's no hills in the south![]()

ha.. oopps.. ha.. bovvered
Yep, done Yorks, in fact think I've done them all or probrably not many in Kentishire I've yet to do.
Both Exedown which is off the Pilgrims Way and Underriver which is for you, up to Seal, right at the old Kebab shop Park Lane and down, otherwise known as Carter's Hill. Both tough climbs.
