How generic are mobile phone sim cards?

I've cut a sim (using an ebay tool) and it didn't work any more. If your contacts are on your sim, proceed with caution.

Or buy something cheap and cheerful that should take your sim but look a bit more modern Sony Xperia etc.

Slow, unintuitive and difficult to use

Yes, they all do that these days. But if he last bought a phone in 2004, apple was not an option. While it is perfectly possible to do a bluetooth sync of contacts between a phone produced in 2004 and a computer and thence to the cloud, however I'm guessing someone who only changes phones every 12 years probably doesn't do this.

@Chris S if you need to save contacts, I'd take the old and new phone into the shop, and see if the staff can help you. So better do it before your old phone goes flat

Using a sixteen year old handset gives this option: Copy All, Card to Phone, with old SIM card, do and Swap SIM cards. Then it's Copy All, Phone to Card.

No real problems. Even the twenty year old Nokia is similar.

Three years ago, the main Galaxy S was already three years old and obsoleted, but, mystifyingly Samsung kept updating and relaunching the dual sim versions until 2014. I guess someone can always be tricked into buying an old pig if you keep putting fresh lipstick on it

I've recently got new SIMs from both EE and O2 for pay-monthly phones for free from the relevant shops. The chap at O2 directed me to the O2 website page where I could swap the SIM over. The chap at EE did the swap there and then, which was fine, except I didn't have the new phone with me so I was without a usable phone until I got home.

Thanks for all you replies - I don't have many contacts to transfer, I was just concerned about not having to change my number. My next phone will probably have a smaller sim so I'll stick with my existing network and they'll do it for me.
