How hard is it to post a bike these days?

I sold a kona hybrid on eBay about a year and a half ago. The courier (I can't remember which one) came to my door next day after arrangement and that was that.

I just sold my rockhopper on eBay and, parcelforce yes parcelforce said it's too big?!? Citylink passed me onto another company with a mobile number (eh no danger) and DHL quoted £112?!?!?

I called royal mail they said no problem just drop it off at the local main depot (bout a mile from my house). They go by weight not size. Is this right? Any suggerstions for a backup plan?

I now see why 80% of eBay bikes are pickup only.

Dimensions are 52x12x29 inches and under 15kg guess weight. I'm quoting 15kg to be safe. Help .

I've had no problems sending bikes by post nor have folk had problems sending bikes to me.

The best service that I've come across and used is www.senditnow.com it will cost about £12 to send a parcel of 18kg with insurance cover of £200 an extra quid ups the cover to £300

A bargain.

Oh and they collect!

You can send a bike as a parcel with Royal Mail as long as the box is less than 1.5 metres long and weighs less than 20 kilos. You can add extra cover to insure the bike if necessary. A bike box from a cycle shop should do but you may need to remove the front wheel to keep it within the length limit

I think it was "parceltogo" that I used - I looked on ebay for couriers and found loads - next day pick up and 24hr turnaround for about £25 - flat rate for a bike.

There are a few others to choose from - cant guarantee their background, but feedback seems to be a good indicator.

All the big firms (TNT, Royal Mail, Parcelforce, Citylink, Homenetwork etc etc) were worse than useless - not interested, too many restrictions, wanted me to deliver to some depot hundreds of miles away and charged stupid rates. So much for economies of scale - stick small for one offs.

Good luck.

Parcel to go did the trick. £25.83 and they're picking it up. I know where to go next time. Many thanks i should've checked here first.

Like Falwheeler, I just drop mine at the local Post Office, they weigh it and I've never paid more than £20. I usually modify the standard boxes to get a snug fit but it doesn't take long.

I was told that Royal Mail would take a bike if it was the correct size and weight - packed it up to the correct size and weight, and guess what? they wouldn't accept it!!!

Parcel force have recently decreased their size limit making it difficult to send a bike now.

I've sent three bikes now with TNT overnight and it was £12 each time! However this was on account as my employer is a major user and TNT sends a truck to our place every day.

There are dozens of trucking companies like Lynx who will carry a large parcel for a few quid.
