How long can you store new tyres before using them?

Or to put it another way, do they have a shelf life?

There are a few good tyre deals at the moment and I fancy some new rubber but don't intend using it for a while (my current tyres appear to be in good condition).

So if I put them away out of sunlight at room temp will they still be OK when I come to use them somewhere down the line?

They're tyres, not eggs They'll be fine.

unless you plan on putting yourself into suspended animation before using them, then yes - they will be fine. I bought a pair of new/old stock Specialized Turbo/S tyres on ebay a couple of years back. They were probably 15 years old at the time and they are still fine to use now.

I've just put two tyres on a MTB that are about 10 years old. They have been hanging in the garage, unused. They're fine.

As above. If you want to be really finicky and worry about their elastomeric life just put them in a black bin bag and tape it up (light and exposure to air degrades rubber over time) but as I said this is just in case you want to hand them on to your children!

Thanks for the replies I've been stocking up recently with a few pairs so it could be quite some time before they're used.

I know with motorbike tyres the rubber goes "off" (although I'm not sure if that's only once they're used) and I only buy them when needed (they are £200 plus per pair though - with a mileage that can be comparable to cycle tyres ).

If they are properly matured they roll faster, this is what USPS did and explains why they were so quick in the mountains.......ohhh ,

I stock up too... and loose track of how many pairs of tyres I have lying around! At current mileage, I reckon I have enough tyres to last, er.... forever in truth.... because I'm not riding. But if I was actually riding, I'd say a couple of years.

Also, store them away from electric motors and where you do any electric arc welding. The ozone created by electrical discharge can damage tyres.
