I've got HTII chainsets and BBs on all three of my bikes, yet I've never had to replace the bearings.

The oldest one must be 5 years old and with 7,000 miles on it.

They all still feel smooth and have no play - so no need to replace yet right?

No need to replace if still smooth. You could check by removing the cranks and turning the bearing by hand to check if still smooth.

I think it depends on how well faced your bottom bracket is, also I guess the conditions you ride in. I've got around 4000Km on mine (only got HII on my 'best' bike) still going strong....

Depends on where you ride and in what conditions - lots of water and mud play havoc with them so they will wear more quickly. Usually non-drive side is the one to go. Watch out though - they can feel ok - ie no play - but may well be seized up and simply rubbing (wearing?) on the crankshaft. If in doubt take the crank off and check as advised above.
