Early 90's , I used a local bloke for connection , we had to que up to get on and it always made a strange noise when you did connect , but it kept going off and stuff with that bloke so I went with a mob called Optus, the best thing at the time for us was ICQ , we could connect with family , friends and follow football matches with it from England , even that was hard for the modem to keep up with sometimes

I built my first website in 1996 after getting some free web space when I moved from AOL to Demon Internet, but a few years before that I had been using Internet-based services such as email, Usenet (AOL groups), and Internet Relay Chat to talk to people all over the world.

I thought it was pretty damned amazing back then to be able to talk to people in America, live, on my PC in real time - albeit at a fairly slow pace across a low-speed modem connection (paying by the minute!!). I often had to wait until really late on a night though as we only had one phone line and I shared it with mum, dad and five other siblings. Getting uninterrupted "online" time took some doing most nights.

I used the internet for the first time probably around 1990, at Uni, browsing the fledging web with Mosaic and Lynx, then later on in my first software developer job in 1994. In the latter, I was using a 9600 baud modem, and the ISP was charging my employer the princely sum of $10/MB for it.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Not until 2001 when we bought our first PC. First email account was with Virgin. Horrible dial up modem and sooooo slowwwwwwww to get anywhere.

Got my first home pc in 91 and a 14.4 dial up modem soon after .
Used AOL from a free disc on the cover of Computer Monthly about a year later.
Switched to the broadband when I got cable tv via Telewest around 99
First real social media application I used was ICQ in early 2000 although there I was on several forums at the time and the old Yahoo email groups.

1998 - Thought I got a great deal by picking up a PC from a bankrupt sale, which had a 233 processor, 32MB RAM and a 4GB hard drive for £800, plus £50 for the monitor. Used AOL dial up at first, then several others before getting brodband in the early 00s.

Used to go on the internet a couple of times a week back then, but now the world is so dependent on it. About 10 years ago, I accidentally cut through the phone line when trimming the ivy on the wll, when I told my 14 year old daughter you would have thought the world was ending, it took about 3 days to get reconnected and she only started talking to me again about a week after that.

3 days!!! (When Mr Summerdays did something similar he had it taped and sorted within a few hours.... and it was still working several years later when we left that house!)
