When our HP desktop gave up after 7 years we bought a Sony Vaio laptop for £600 (Sony have pulled the plug now)
Nothing but trouble, away to repair twice, in the end got our money back and bought 2 IPads instead.
Originally went to buy a MacBook but being used to touch screen just didn't like it.
CD thingies are available for the IPad if required, I love mine, so quick and portable, would never go back to a laptop.

All bets are off re: taking it back, OH has just told me he's had the back off it to have a look, which I assume voids any warranty!

I bought my Dell D430 in 2008. It got light use until 2012. After that I started using the laptop for probably 6-8 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is still going strong after 2.5 years of that heavy use. The only problems I have had are bad clusters on the HDD (which CHKDSK sorted out), and the battery life which is now down to a pitiful 45 minutes (!). TBH - I use it on mains only, so the latter problem isn't a big deal. For portable use, it is my tablet every time.

I've only had one laptop last 3 years, and that's the one I have now, although its battery doesn't work anymore and the USB ports don't work. The HDD failed after 2 years and so I bought a replacement and installed it myself.

The only trouble we've had was when Mrs R spilt a whole flask of hot coffee (don't ask) over the keyboard of her work one which instantly died. Lucky she had enough in one of her grants to get a new one.
A friend of mine phoned me up one evening having drunk a whole bottle of red wine, so he was a bit sloshed at the time. As he was talking to me I heard him open a second bottle, there was a glugging sound, a yelp, and a pause ...

Then he asked ... "How much do you reckon it would cost to mend a Mac laptop?"***

He had gone to pour a glass of wine, missed the glass, and poured wine into his laptop instead!

*** I think it cost him about £500 for a new motherboard. An expensive drink!

But the box the teapot came in clearly stated it was hardwearing. It didn't say it shouldn't be dropped. Insert dumbass smiley face to make it look funny or more acceptable here >>> <<<<
