Looking for some advice, Im changing my 1x chainring from a 44t to a 40t and was wondering how many links I should remove from my chain. Anyone done something similar or know what I should look out for?

Just try it as is. If the RD takes up the slack on the small cog, then ok. If it makes the chain rub against the cassette, then take a couple of links out.

The chain will engage 22t on the larger chainring and 20t on the one the OP is changing to. If the chain is the correct length for the 44t ring then by taking one double link out (one inch) the chain will be a similarly correct length. But as @Sharky says (I think he means, in the small sprocket 'if it makes the chain rub against the chain'), could just leave it as the amount of wrap required will be nowhere near the RD's capacity.
