Mine's only about 3.5 miles each way.

There's a slightly longer and hillier coastal route which I occasionally take on the way home, which is a whopping five miles.

I usually do this journey about five or six times a week. Some days it'll be twice due to working a split shift

Four days a week, it's about 1.3 miles one way, the other it's about 3. At the moment I'm only doing that base mileage, but I want to work up to doing extra, so that I'm commuting 50 miles a week minimum, something I managed last summer. It'll probably be when I swap to the summer bike, which is more conducive to extra miles. One difference from last year is that now we start half an hour earlier 3 days a week, so where last year I felt like leaving early enough to get some extra miles on the way in (enough to make it 5 miles each way), now I'll probably end up doing the extra mostly after work.

Just weighed my Carrera Subway 8, including the Halfords 'Massload' rack (but without the lights and rack bag full of tools and waterproofs) it is 15.4Kg/34lbs. Add to that the drag from the hub and roller brakes and the sluggish 1.6" tyres and its no wonder its hard work getting it up the hills on the way to work.

Since the weather was pleasant on the ride home yesterday, I took a detour to extend my route.

I turned left at Cholmondeston, and, instead of turning right for Church Minshull, I continued straight on towards Darnhall and to the edge of Winsford. It was mostly ok apart from the two massive dips on the way back to C M which I didn't know existed until then!!! An unexpected 30mph+ blast downhill then a lung busting crawl at 5-10mph and a short breather at the top of the first one. I did make it to the other side without getting off and pushing, which with my asthma is a big achievement, all with the help of the Granny Gear

My usual ride home is 9.1 miles as I stated further up and this new route took me up to 13.7 miles.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Average of 10 miles each way.

Google maps gives 9.86 and the bike computer says 10.25 so i call it 10

I have used different routes but they all work out about the same give or take a few minutes, come summer time i might add a few miles to it but if we get 2 hours mandatory overtime i just want to get home .This week i have been leaving home at 5.45 am and not getting home till gone 7 pm due to the amount of work we have atm

Direct route, mainly on country roads 9.67 miles, 5 days a week on my fixed wheel Touche. Usually extend the return anywhere from 16 - 32 miles.

Only returned to commuting this year five weeks ago after 6 months recovering from a ligament tear in my left knee, building back up to 5 days from 2 days. Still a little restricted, knee feels tight if i spin the pedals to much, looking forward to buiding up the distance and kicking in a few climbs as the knee improves.

You know, there's some pretty impressive commuting going on, judging by this thread.

Based on posts in this thread so far (not by votes), I make it a total of 581 miles each way we have totted up, at an average of just over 10 miles.

Keep it up!

15 miles each way for me 5 days a week. I like to take detours on the way home sometimes to vary the route and check out new roads.
Fairly flat though so not much hill (Shame!)
I love to ride :-)

5.25 miles each way, 5 days a week at the moment. This is plenty for me and I'm not tempted to do any extra miles at the weekends ... I need the weekends to recover.

However I did go to a cycle clinic in Cambridge last weekend and they pumped up my tyres to 50 psi. Apparently they were about 20 psi before. I noticed the extra speed straight away and I've since knocked about 5 minutes off my commute time.

I must buy a decent pump with a pressure guage.

You should be able to judge 50psi or more by squeezing the tyre in your hand, it should 'give' very little.

Presumably these are wide MTB type tyres, say 38mm, I would recommend going to at least 60 for those. For narrow road tyres you need a lot higher pressure: 100 to 120.

The maximum pressure will usually be embossed somewhere on the side of the tyre. Go by that as a guideline.

My commute is 5.1 miles on the way in it is consistently uphill all the way.

At the moment I find it quite a struggle but try to ride it at least twice a week. I work shifts so not getting home til 2200hrs and then having to leave the next day at 0600hrs is tiring too!

I hope to increase to 3 or 4 times a week when i am able.

My commute is 7 miles each way. Most of it along a path next to a busy dual carriageway. With the wind against me and lorries coming in the opposite direction it can make it a tough 7 miles.
