if you don't want puncture protection, try puncture-prevention...

I use SMPs. I change the tyres once a year, need to or not. I've had two flats since I started using them, years ago; one was a defective inner tube, which I was able to replace at the roadside with no problem; and the other was when I switched to a Bontrager hardcase and it didn't last a week, so back to the SMPs.
They are the biggest bug ger to get on the first time but easier after that. A couple of weeks ago I replaced the rear and really thought that I wasn't going to be able to get it on at all. Eventually I succeeded using a shoe-horn. I literally shoe-horned the tyre onto the rim. Every bike fettler's tool-kit should have a shoe horn.

Bike shop didn't do a Marathon in 28, and the All Condition armadillo did not look very much like the tyre I have been using. The tread looked painted on as an afterthought. I put on a Nimbus Armadillo instead, and will play with it. It was reasonably easy to get on. The old front tyre looks like new on the back now. If I like the Armadillo, I'll get another for the back.

I'm surprised by the mileage figures that people are giving. I have had a GP3000 last 10,000 miles, and would be really put out if a tyre lasted less than 3,000 miles. I take on board Twanger's points about riding style and weight, but 1,250 isn't much.

I use GP4000s, but I reckon 4Seasons are less puncture prone.

I used a set of wolbers in the '80s which lasted me satisfactorily about 6 thousand miles. I have not seen wolber tyres since I got back into cycling. With the All Conditions, the evidence is there. I have only done at the most 1500 on them, and the rubber is gone. Bald and square. Maybe the rubber is soft...certainly the tyres gripped well.

Dunno.
