I don't use any WIFI away from home for security reasons. Read the T&Cs of those 'free ones'
Read the T&Cs of your mobile network lately?

Virtual Private Networking and/or Tor is the way to go.

I've just moved into a new place, Internet not connected yet but logging on through a hotspot. Is this safe to do?

Yes. I'm grateful that can't happen on Norwegian short-haul after roll-back.

What is itwith us Brits and our shouty mobile calls? The Swedes are rarely off the phone yet don't do the whole shouty thing. Is it becaise the use headsets nearly 100% of the time?

I'm still on Three's One Plan (no letter or email received telling me it has been amended, as others have received), unlimited data and tethering, only used 161mb this month, but then the phone connects to work or home WiFi whenever possible

400 - 500mb a month, usually, depending on what I'm up to. Using streaming services (which I don't, being a luddite who likes his music on a microSD card, and doesn't watch much video while out and about) pushes that right up. I remember that watching Paris-Roubaix while away from home one year used up 800mb!

I do think that with judicious use of wifi etc I could get my usage down to around 600-700mb a month. However that would involve thinking about how I use my phone so the 10gb limit I have means I don't need to concern myself with "Can I watch the news here?", "Is the wifi good enough to allow me to update my apps" etc.

Well, that should be as safe as using your own BT home/business router, with a small added risk that the subscriber has subverted it but I think not many people who are technically-savvy enough to do that will be using BT's junk. Nevertheless, I'd take the usual public hotspot security precautions, such as: secure every connection you can (tick the TLS or SSL boxes when they're offered them and grumble to anyone you pay that doesn't support them) and consider using a VPN for sites like this which don't yet have secure connections.

Thanks for that mjray I inderstand most of it. BT were the only ones that could offer me any form of service from this exchange. We nearly went Plusnet but they were literally offering goods they then said I would have to wait for once they got my money.

10Gb limit but I never use it all. I got that much mainly so I didn't need to worry about usage. I even use it at home because my wi-fi is so rubbish. It doesn't cost that much because I own my phone outright so I'm on sim only.

Just remember that so called "free" phones bundled with a contract are actually really on hire-purchase and be sure to update your contract once the phone is paid off.

I got a cracking deal with Caroline warehouse £31 a month 5gb of data and a S5 as it is water and dust proof ideal for me.

To be honest I rarely hit the 2gb mark as I use wiFi mainly but it is nice having such a large amount of data as you don't feel the need to constantly check what you are using.
