How much difference do mudguard mounts make?

Thanks for all the advice, which has persuaded me that mudguard mounts are worth having.

Are there any particular mudguards that you’d recommend for a road bike? Or any to avoid?

SKS chromoplastic are the "industry standard". They are very tough so come with a front safety release feature which is essential.
Other boutique brands may make better but most are worse.

Another vote for SKS here, they do various models, I like lonboards, but I noticed up thread someone says they are discontinued.
