Given the offers you can find for around £300 (a few £500 hybrids like Giant Roam2/Specialized Crosstrail down to £300 online), you can get a lot of value for money IMHO compared to £100 supermarket bikes etc. That said, id probably be looking for a £800 bike next time round, because i know itll get used.

I know it's like "how long is a piece of string" but...............
When I have purchased e.g. binoculars I found that at the lower price range there were big differences in quality with every £50/£100 spent. However, once you get to, say, £500 the differences became slight and the price increase difficult/impossible to justify.
I just wonder what the general opinion is on cycle prices and at what point do the differences become negligible compared to the increased cost.

Like you say its all relative, someones already mentioned the Subway as an example which I got for £240. By comparision Halfords next model 'up' (Crossfire 2010) had a poor quality shock and grip shifts but was more expensive at £300+.

Personally I think your better buying a bike that may be simpler, but offer better quality. e.g. Its often said at £500 buy a hardtail MTB as they will be better overall than the equivelent £500 full suspension.
