In light of this (19 year old lad murdered) sort of report how concerned are you when your kids are out and about?

Mine are 22 and 18, both regularly out until the early hours. They're both sensible, but the youngest in particular has some 'interesting' acquaintances.

I wouldn't (couldn't!) stop them going out, but I still sometimes sit at home on a Saturday night and worry about what they're up to and where they are.

My Mum rang me in a panic some years ago, because she'd heard on the news about a woman in York killed by some falling masonary in high winds.

I would have been about 35 at the time.

I guess you never stop being a Mum, or Dad.

Worrying about the children is all part and parcel of being a parent. We do live in an increasingly violent society but the media plays to our deepest fears. It would be nice if the stories were a little more balanced to help us be a bit more positive.

That's a good point. I suppose the fact that the vast majority of young people who go for a night out get home safely, having had a good time and not having got into any trouble doesn't make for good headlines.

The original post is unnerving.

I'd had a conversation about gun crime in Nottingham with a colleague who told me I was wrong and out of date. ....

To be fair "the last fatal shooting in the city was 20 months ago" (quote from the link). I live in the sticks and it's common to hear shotguns, but I was sat in my GFs kitchen not long ago (she lives in a 'nice' area, but only a mile from where the incident in the link happened) and we heard what sounded distinctly like a gun-shot:eek:

Last fatal shooting - when was the last non-fatal shooting?

Also in York, that 16 year old girl who died in Tang Hall last Friday in dubious circumstances.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/9660932.Two_arrested_after_death_of_girl__16__in_Tang_Hall/?ref=mr

why worry about stuff that hasnt happened and to be honest you probably cant influence anyway?

Perhaps her parents are wishing they had done something differently, whether they could is another matter.

Tang Hall has a reputation in York.

Simon Moss, who lives opposite the house and is the chairman of the Tang Hall residents’ association, also reported hearing “a lot of police activity”.
He said: “I heard police sirens just after midnight after an alarm went off. There are always sirens going off here.
“It seems there is some kind of trouble more often than not. The fact that it is connected to drugs does not surprise me in this area. You get all sorts of things going on – but you still don’t expect this thing to happen on your doorstep. I have seen the girl around and she always seemed pleasant. It is such a shame.”

My two girls are 16 and 14, i am 62.I am overprotective,i must give them some leeway.Phone us,tell us when, sort of thing. And just this morning our eldest is ill again.More tests starting next week. But i would rather be this way than a not bother attitude.
