I use a Topeak MTX trunkbag. Not too bad, but does add to the weight of the bike (it's on a QR beamrack). I weigh up the advantages of having all the spares and repair kit/waterproof jacket, spare boxers and socks against the lack of performance, and am just looking forward to the days when I can take it off and ride the bike on its own!

Topeak MTX trunk bag with all the gubbins. Friday's journey home is the heaviest as I bring all the makeup, shower stuff, work clothes, boots and sometimes shopping back. The strange thing is whilst I can feel the weight it only seems to add a minute to my journey. Fantastic fun at the weekends when I'm not carrying the kitchen sink with me though.

I take:

Work clothes
Shower kit
A fleece for wearing at work
A pair of size 12 safety boots (heavy, those!)
Decent lock
A couple of books
A waterproof jacket and a long sleeved top
Sandwiches

and it all goes in two panniers. Which slows even me* down quite a lot.

* Like I wasn't going slowly enough already.:ohmy:

All of the above make sense, but do like I do and leave the following at work:
Shower kit
A fleece for wearing at work
A pair of size 12 safety boots (heavy, those!)
Decent lock

There is no need to carry these backwards and forwards each day.

I always found the greatest effect is not the weight of bag (or pannier) but the fact it's a cummute. Stop-start all the way. As a result I'm one or two mph down on where I'd be on a pure road ride.

Has anyone notice being able to go home faster than to work?

.

Hell no, it's literally all up hill on the way home!

Not too much - I give her a quick peck on the cheek, prise her hands from my lycra, then I'm out the door....

I don't really notice it when I've got a backpack on my back. However if I've been cycling to work with for a few days/weeks then cycle without, I feel as if I weigh practically nothing and as if I could almost fly over the traffic.

Sadly, I think it's all an illusion. ;-)
