Going round Brittany last summer prices varied from 5 euros to 11 euros. I'd say the average was about 7. Perhaps cheaper inland at non-touristy areas.

It's generally cheaper per person for two or more people because most sites will have a charge per emplacement and a charge per camper.

Depends where you are. Municipal sites are usually 4 -5 euro for the pitch and 2 - 3 per person but private ones which may be the only choice in popular tourist areas are more like 15 - 25 for a pitch and two people.

Most I paid was 11 each but that was a beach side place with pool. Mostly it was around the 6 or 7 euros mark, or gratis if a site was closed/unmanned or we wild camped - turned out to be about 1/3rd of the time!

Dave, or anyone else for that matter, did you find municipal sites in the south and, if so, were they priced higher?
I've only cycle/camped in the northern half of France.
Also, did you have any bother just turning up at the site without pre-booking?

I remember BFTB saying on his French end to end ride report that as soon as you got within a days driving distance of the med then prices were crazy high in comparison to elsewhere - one place was like 20 euros just for 1 person bike and tent.

My experience was that of the two sites that charged more than 10 euros one was a municipal, and of the three sites that charged me 5 euros or so two were private. Municipal sites will charge the going rate - more or less. this will depend on the area and the facilities on that site. Private sites often tend to have swimming pools so are more expensive, but like-for-like prices are comparable. There are plenty of decent good-value private sites around.

Rich,

There didn't seem to be so many municipal sites in the south east, we ended up paying 15 & 17 euro for a cramped patch of gravel when we were near Nice. Also ended up having to go on to the next town a couple of times, but that was in August. As ever, we also stayed in a couple of fanatastic sites that were cheap as well.

The price in the municipal in Aix-en-Provence was €15 for just a patch of rock-hard dust and very basic facilities. I struggled to find any sites in Provence for under €12 for a bloke and a bike and a small tent.

Not true. It all depends on the individual camp sites. Municipal campsites in the south charge more, around 10-12 Euros, and the one camp site where I was charged around 20 euros, the owner gave me a bottle of wine to toast the end of my Channel to Med ride.

My experience in Corsica (which has the reputation for being a pricey destination) was that prices for campsites were pretty consistent with Brittany. In fact the cheapest place (4.5 euros) was a beachside camping site in Corsica.

Most campsites these days have a website so it is fairly easy to research prices for possible sites along the way to avoid nasty surprises. Google Maps is a really useful tool for this.

Oh and it's important to bear in mind that a lot depends on when you go. Expect to pay a good bit more if you go in July or August.
