Ok, I'm a newbie, as some of you already know, but I'm gonna ask the question......How much do you have to spend on a decent bike to travel on roads to work, even though you're on a limited budget ?????
You'll probably want to budget £100-150 or so for helmet, mitts, some sort of high vis and water/wind resistant jacket, lights, padded shorts
How far are you riding and over what sort of terrain - only road or rougher stuff (and not only potholes )?
Are you new to cycling and do you think you may want to upgrade sooner rather than later? I am assuming your budget isn't limited to a grand by the way!
If you ask around, you can often find a friend, relative or neighbour who has a suitable bike stuck in the back of their shed not getting used. You could pick up something like that for nothing, or maybe a few pounds.

As with buying shoes or a bed, spend as much as your budget will allow. That's what budgets are for.
(From my limited bike buying experience, sensibly equipped new bikes will come in around £200+. Bikes can be bought for less that this, but I wouldn't buy one.
It's a bit like Stella Artois (likes to think it is), they should be reassuringly expensive.)
If it's just for work a decent second hand one will do ya. there seems to be quite a lot of second hand bikes around, and you get a chance to try before you buy,
