How strong are SPD pedals?

I have a set of MTB SPD's on my bike as I wanted some shoes which I could walk about in without breaking my ankles.
It has got to the point where the tread has worn on the shoes and I am now starting to wear down the cleats. It isnt a problem as shoes and cleats arent too expensive.

But what about the pedals? They are showing a little bit of rust on the springs and where I clip in but the whole things aret too bad.
The problem is, I often lay the bike on its side or propped it up against a wall when working on it. This has caused wear on the sides of the pedals. There is no play in the pedals or the cranks and nothing is loose or bent. The SHIMANO print has dissappeared though.
So my question is this: How much wear can the pedals take side on until they need changing?

Tons... they are very strong beasts. And as you have found out, the cleats outlive the shoes.
Give the pedals a spray with WD40 or suchlike and give them a wipe just to get all the crap off them .

TBH they are not actually that dirty. Even though I cycle through sand and such, the rain seems to carry any muck off with it. WD40 probably helps loosen up the spring though.

It will dissipate any water and help clear the rust from the springs.
You can then dollop some 3-1 oil onto to the springs.

I have been dangling up to 16.5 stone of ColinJ off various SPD pedals on steep, rough bridleways and roads in Yorkshire and Lancashire for around 15 years and I haven't broken or worn one out yet so I reckon that yours should be okay!
