The older I get the more my backside hurts after a long ride. It's not rubbing or sore, just aches from sitting in the saddle so long. I do all the moving around, standing etc all the time while riding, but still my bum crys out for something more. Now being a hotshot supercool roadie from hell (cough) there is no way Im going to get a padded saddle...so I wondered if there is any way additional padding can be added to the inside of my shorts? Or are there extra thick pads somewhere already in a range of shorts? Painkiller sis my other masterplan but they make me dizzy on hard rides.

I'm on a selle italia saddle...which is perfectly comfy over 50 miles, but between 50 -100 my delecate derriere deserves better.
Ta for any sensible and particulary ridiculous comments.

Lose weight!

Seriously - I am so much more comfortable on long rides since I slimmed down from over 16.5 stone to just over 12. Same bikes, same saddles, same routes. The only things that changed were the flabbiness of my bum and the total weight pressing down on it.

It would also help with chasing fit Germans over mountains in Cyprus!

(By the way I suffer from this problem - the older one gets the less padding one has in certain areas - it seems to shift to my stomach)
I found extra 'padding' was one of the problems, kind of equivalent to sitting on a squidgy gel saddle. Flab just gets squeezed off to somewhere else so you end up sitting more on the muscle and bone underneath while the flab is getting rubbed raw.

Bloke in a pub told me padding isn't the answer, you want the weight to go straight on your sit bones, the bones either side of your bum. Padding can restrict blood flow.

As what others have said - try another saddle.
And as what other also said. Selle SMP, not to everyones taste but so bloody comfy for long days in the saddle,

The 5:2 fasting approach works for me and lots of other people - 5 days a week eating plenty of healthy food and some 'treats', 2 days with only healthy food in restricted amounts.

Extra padding is certainly not the answer; gel padded saddles or shorts will, as ColinJ says, just make you sweaty and transfer the load to your soft tissues, which will chafe. The best shorts pads are thinnish but stiff enough to resist creasing or folding while still offering a little padding.

Try changing to a Charge saddle, I love my Charge Knife, which I simply don't notice even on a 100 miler. Losing weight will help too - I used to do Polaris trailquests and I quickly discovered that trying to carry the weight of the overnight kit in a rucsac was a recipe for bum-ache so I was one of the few who used pannniers.
