Our Scottish bretheren have an amusing phrase to describe the art of "having a free lunch" called "Dine and Dash." Why not modify this tacts and "Sleep and Dash"?

Appreciate the sentiment, Crankarm. This is not a covert operation and is being done with full disclosure and express consent. Worse case, we end up paying full rates. Or worse worse case, we stay at home....

It's not great that we only have Friday night free - it limits distance we are prepared to travel; and apparent availability of hotels (due to the requirement some have of a minimum 2 night stay).

Ok then, with tent and bag under arms just in case, I would front up to a well posh hotel between 8:30 and 9pm and haggle. It works in France very well which I appreciate is a very different market to exponseeve UK hotels. I have even been allowed to stay free for a night in an Accor 3 star hotel in France or failing that paid prices well below 50% of full room rate with breakfast still included .

In the UK, turning up is the worst thing you can do - they are the only people who pay the rack rate. Always phone or book on the web.

Manchester is a great city, only 2hrs15 from Euston and I can get you £99 at the Novotel for B&B.

Just had an e-mail from Q hotels which informs me they have deals at the posh Midland Hotel in Manchester for just £39! That's a great rate for this place and you are right at the heart of a vibrant city centre. Have a look at their (Q hotels) website.

It's quite easy sometimes to work out what the secret hotels on Lastminute are if you look at the description and facilities available. Use www.tripadvisor.com as well to work out what the hotels are actually like.

If you end up going to Brighton then avoid The Grand. Past its best.

Thanks to all.

Hotel du Vin really pi$$ed us off. Very arrogant attitude.

So we ended up here: http://www.thekinghamplough.co.uk/

It was fabulous. Very simple, very beautiful. Excellent food. Highly recommended.

...But they didn't do us a deal on the room. But it was in any event quite cheap.

Er... have you actually been in any of the rooms at The Midland?

"Tired" is the most polite adjective I can think of.

As I live only a bus ride away, I have to admit I haven't, no. They can't be that bad though judging by the people I've seen staying there. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the England football team, Take That, Beyonce Knowles to name just a few I've seen in there over the years.

I found myself in a hotel which normally would be well out of my price range in Leicester Square.
There were no hidden snags, it was an excellent deal for me.:smile:

Yes - tried it and got a very good deal. However we did have the advantage of being able to work out which hotel they were talking about.

a lucky escape. Nothing worse than a dirty room and being charged £13 for a 'continental breakfast' on top of the £185 room rate.

Book a normal rate room, but turn up with traces of confetti in your hair and lok very excited.

A mate has done this 3 times now and got a room upgrade each time

Not sure how well this would work if, like me, you're staying on your own.
