We have a few family orientated cycling events to run this summer and in the past have usually failed to get a mention. I've noticed that 'charity' events on the other hand never fail to make an appearance.
Are there any tips to guarantee success ? We only require a paragragh FGS!

How and when do you contact the paper with the details?

You need to ring up and ask to speak with the relevant editor or reporter. Newspapers are desperate for real stories that they haven't got to make up.

Offer them a 'human interest' angle to go with the core event...perhaps 'children of family x are world champion scottish dancers'...'Mr and Mrs Smith and their twin boys...' that sort of thing. A digital snap + emailed press release can be re-sent...to lots of different reporters perhaps - invite participation and the paper covers their own journos within the event...

Might be worth to look over your press releases. I've written a few successful ones in the past, but it is hard work.

One got me an interview on bbc radio, another got the company I worked for a meeting with a large magazine publisher.

Pays to remember that a press release is to tell them about news....not just the fact you want a free advert . I'd say if you really are interested in getting a story, give them a ring as well. Actually speak to someone about it, as press releases could me missed, lost or just ignored.

I very rarely bother with press releases anymore, I just phone the newsdesk, give them a story and offer a photo opportunity.

Best time to ring is mid afternoon when they're looking for stories for the next day.
