Anyway, I was looking for a different tattoo thread but can't find it. I was going to be asking about the process involved in getting a tattoo, how to go about the design, consultation, choosing the right artist, "building" a larger design over time - I can see my search for such answers has no place here!
Portsmouth, Saturday night, 10 pints - sorted

Will it be something as good as this?
You have to *really* like a joke to have it instantly visible, permanently, on your person for the rest of your life.

Where do you want the tat marmion. If you have it on the upper arms for example it can be hidden with a t-shirt.Just another thing to consider.

I don't have a tattoo and have no desire to get one but is it not possible to get one of these temporary ones first, to see if you like it when it's actually on your skin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm the only one of the three of us not tattooed (wife has 2, 20 yr old is about to get the 9th).

Where you have it matters a bit. Consider if you want to be able to cover it up or not (or if you want it as a chat up line I guess). The higher up the arm/leg the easier it is to cover up, likewise shoulders are harder than middle of the back if you're a vest wearer. This is a double whammy, not only will it be seen by more people if it's somewhere you never cover, but it'll need more care to keep vibrant if it is colours as they will fade thanks to being out in the sun unless taken care of. The other half of where you have it is that the closer the skin is to the bone the more painful the process will be. This all depends on how much you care about the pain, and how susceptible you are to it, my wife's first was a large tat centred down the spine. She was perfectly happy with that. I've heard the inside arch of the foot is the most painful location, possibly the ankle.

Tattoo artists are apparently the last of the great tax dodgers so cost wise will be a mix of time and agreed price (probably based on an estimate of time) The shop the 20 yr old is about to go to charges £70 per hour I believe. Find art you like, look at their portfolio, make sure you are happy with the studio before you use it. Some artists like to draw the design first (my wife's was like this) and can create the art for you, others want to have the picture done. If you have a solid idea of what you want a good tattooist shouldn't have a problem replicating that, although they may suggest variations based on their knowledge of the process (my wife's second was a sleeping dragon drawn by an artist friend. the tattooist reduced the original art for the location and suggestion colour changes based on the amount of black that was involved.

I'm just back from getting my hair cut and spotted a tattoo magazine lying on the table whilst waiting so had a good read of it, then spoke to the barber who told me that they belonged to a customer of his who had a tattoo studio round the corner - unfortunately they are on holiday this week or I'd have popped in for a chat.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies - re positioning, I am thinking upper arm or lower leg, mostly due to wanting it covered whilst at work; if lowr leg I'd be looking at full coverage, and if upper arm then probably extending over shoulder (it would be really upper arm and not starting at elbow.)

I spoke to my wife about it last night and she was supportive of it in a "you're too chicken to get one" kinda way...then said, "actually I reckon it would look great" when I described what I had in mind as it should be visually quite impressive as well as being meaningful to me..

Is it going to be like those birthday cards? You know the ones: you push the button on the card and crap music starts playing!

Go for it Marmy!

That's a good idea, I'll incorporate a "press here" button on the design and when anyone presses it I can sing a wee song. Inspired idea. Not.

I may be just me but i dont like tats on the legs,or should i say, tats on the legs and nowhere else.It appears odd to me,fair enough when you have tats in other places but just on the leg doesn't look right for me.The upper arm is the one i would go for if this is your first tat.
