I wonder if you could give me some advice. I have a camera the gives me jpeg images of about 3.5 MB but the files are often too large to transmit by email etc. Is there a really easy way of reducing the size of the files to a few hundred KB? I can do it by manipulating them in MSPaint but it's absolute agony and the image tends to end up in the corner on a large blank page due to my stupidity.
That's it really. Thank you.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
And if you want to avoid having to wait while the internet transmits 3.5MB of photo up to a server, use Picasa to store and sort your photos on your own machine. Its "export" function shrinks the file size.

If this is the only destination for most of your photos, just set your camera to a lower resolution, effectively creating a smaller image size - I guarantee you won't notice the difference. Unless you're blowing your pictures up beyond A4 size, you rarely need more than the equivalent of about 4 megapixels. And apparently the very, very best 35mm films in the pre-digital days only gave the equivalent resolution of 12 megapixels, so unless you plan on blowing your pictures up to the size of buses, using the high end of your cameras capabilities is largely pointless.

+1 on lowering the camera res.

Also for a good free photoshop type app try Gimp.

I just downloaded that actually for the first time a few days ago. Never used it before. Seems quite good though. Can't suggest any good forums for it can you by any chance?

If you're running Windows go to your 'Search programs and files' prompt and type in paint. It will open MS-Paint, which will allow you to edit and resize JPEGs. I always reduce my photos to about 20% before I upload them to forums. It takes too long otherwise with my mobile broadband.
